Atrial Septal Defects in the Adult
نویسنده
چکیده
Nomenclature and Classification There are 3 major types of ASDs or interatrial communications: ostium secundum, ostium primum, and sinus venosus (Figure 1A) defects. The ostium secundum is a true defect of the atrial septum and involves the region of the fossa ovalis. The ostium primum defect is within the spectrum of the atrioventricular (AV) septal defects (Figure 1B; also known as AV canal defects or endocardial cushion defects), the complete form of which also includes a large ventricular septal defect and a common AV valve. The sinus venosus defect is usually located at the junction of the right atrium and superior vena cava and is almost always associated with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. Two very uncommon types of ASDs may be mentioned briefly: the inferior vena cava form of the sinus venosus defect and the coronary sinus septal defect (in which a defect between the coronary sinus and the left atrium allows a left-to-right shunt to occur through an “unroofed” coronary sinus).

Holt-Oram Syndrome: A Rare Variant
Holt-Oram syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder, characterised by skeletal abnormalities of the upper limb associated with congenital heart defect, mainly atrial and ventricular septal defects. Skeletal defects exclusively affect the upper limbs in the preaxial radial ray distribution and are bilateral and asymmetrical. They range from clinodactyly, absent or digitalised thumb, hypoplastic...
متن کاملEvaluation of Clinical Course in Children and Adolescents with Atrial Septal Defects
Background Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are the most common third congenital heart defects. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical course of ASDs and the relationship between its complications, location closure and size. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted...
متن کاملUrgent Surgical Intervention for Embolized Cardiac Occluder Devices: A Case Series
Introduction: In this study, we sought to illustrate our experience in urgent surgical management for embolized cardiac septal occlude devices resulting from trans-catheter closure of atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect. Mathrials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed four patients aged 2–10 years who underwent urgent surgery due to cardiac septal occluder embolization between...
متن کاملCombined percutaneous treatment of atrial septal defect and pulmonic or aortic stenosis in adult patients
Combined atrial septal defect and pulmonic or aortic stenosis are relatively uncommon conditions in adult patients, with few reported cases of percutaneous treatment. We present two patients with secundum type atrial septal defect and concomitant pulmonic or aortic stenosis and their treatment by transcatheter techniques.

متن کاملMinimally invasive repair of atrial septal defects--a case series.
INTRODUCTION Repair of atrial septal defects in adults has become so safe that emphasis is now placed on improving cosmesis without compromising safety. The results of our series of minimally invasive repair of atrial septal defects done through a lower partial sternotomy are reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eight adult patients underwent minimally invasive repairs of atrial septal defects ove...
